The Google Adsense Bitchslap

Recently Google notified me that one of my web proxies (Unblock Youtube) was in violation of an Adsense policy that prohibited the use of Google services on domains or websites using trademarks owned by Google. While I could have expected something like this to come along eventually, it does sting because of the very high CTR above 2% I was receiving on that page. Top that off with some great paying ads and that website generated a couple hundred dollars per month without even trying.

In addition to Google making this decision, Adbrite also decided to change their TOS to disallow proxies from displaying their banner ads. This was the second of three forms of monetization I was using on this particular site and now I am left simply with Adversal which displays popups.

These changes meant a new strategy for maximizing profits on my proxies. I have been a member of Clickbank for a while now and have used it with moderate success in safelist advertising campaigns, but now I am beginning to utilize their ads on my proxy. I have targeted the offers to what I assume to be the primary demographic of my proxies and have seen decent CTR since going live, however no purchases or commissions as of yet.

Blogging for Residual Income

Blogging is a great way to create a residual income stream that will keep on giving for months or even years. This blog was created with the goal of making money. It has seen better days, but still keeps on kicking. Certain blog posts drive the majority of traffic to the site and by properly monetizing those posts, I continue to receive checks from Google for content that I wrote a long time ago.

The top earning post on Shaun Carter dot Com is currently Dr Dre and the Beats Laptop. I wrote this post on August 7 and it has steadily gained in ranking on Google for some terrific keywords including, beats laptop, dre laptop price, and dr dre beats laptop. By ranking #1 on google for the term “beats laptop” this post is generating a very steady stream of free, highly-targeted traffic, the best kind there is.

As far as earnings are concerned, this post has generated $25.82 through Google’s Adsense program. The post took about fifteen to twenty minutes to write and continues to produce revenue and average earnings per click of over a dollar. The best part is that this post will continue to earn as long as it stays online. I expect it to earn another $10-15 in January as traffic to the post continues to increase as I rise in the Google rankings.

Laziness and Internet Success

So I’ve decided that it is pure laziness that causes my lack of success online. While it works in college, the way I don’t study and yet still maintain my place on the Dean’s List, in the world of online income, laziness kills. I have achieved moderate success with my proxy server Unblock YouTube and credit card comparison website, but I have yet to take my efforts in Affiliate Marketing seriously.

Proxy Season Is Back

So with the school year starting up for students all over the country, and world – the earnings on my proxies have risen about five fold. Unblock YouTube is performing especially well bringing in around $5 per day for the last week.

I keep scouting for more good proxy domains but they are very hard to come by. My YouTube proxy ranks number one in Google for many related search terms and generates hundreds of visits that way each day. But the others do not garner anywhere near that level of traffic without substantial advertising.

I am looking forward to a profitable school year especially since I will not be working in a traditional job during the academic year. I am actively searching for profitable proxies with unique domain names to purchase for about 6 months worth of provable earnings. So, if you happen to have one (or many), do let me know.

March 2008 Proxy Earnings

The month of March 2008 is the best yet for my proxy network. My network is comprised of Unblock Youtube and Rasta Proxy.

Unblock Youtube continues to dominate for some great Google keywords and brought in nearly 30,000 visits to the main page and hundreds of thousands of proxy pageviews. I decided to remove the Adversal popunders because there was no way for me to set a frequency cap on them and they were annoying users. That fact is supported by the very steep increase in the number of pages surfed on the proxy as users were more likely to stick around longer when not bombarded by popunders.

Rasta Proxy is struggling and is only generating a few cents daily. The reason being poor adsense targeting/payouts on that page due to a bad domain name. I decided to monetize Rasta Proxy using only adbrite and have been unsuccessful in generating any meaningful traffic to the site. The top 3 Google ranking for Unblock Youtube is what creates nearly all of the revenue for that site and finding a domain with similar SE rank will not be an easy task, or a cheap one.

I have also been using the two proxies to promote my credit card comparison site as well as this blog and have gotten a decent number of clickthroughs from their respective text links. Afterall, it is free advertising.

Perhaps April 2008 will be the month that profit from my proxies tops $100.
