Dr Dre and the Beats Laptop

I got into a discussion regarding the recent expansion of Dr. Dre’s speaker line expanding into Laptops. I was quite surprised to hear, and later read, the claims being made about this new laptop’s sound capabilities. I have never owned a laptop that even comes close to producing anything considered quality sound. Ever try listening to bass-heavy music or watch a movie on a laptop? The experience is very depressing when compared to even the most budget-friendly desktop speaker.
This limited edition Beats by Dr Dre laptop boasts a quad-core processor and Dre’s proprietary sound software that will supposedly revolutionize the sound coming from a laptop computer. I am skeptical of anyone who claims to make a laptop produce great sound, simply because the limitations are not software related, but are hardware – there simply isn’t enough space in a laptop to place large enough speakers to produce the kind of sound quality I crave.
There are dual SSD’s that increase speed and reliability. The SSDs will ideally offset the massive power consumption of a quad core processor so that there is at least some battery life leftover to listen to music when you aren’t in proximity to a power outlet. I have read several posts that are claiming this laptop will be comparable to a Macbook Pro… but I wouldn’t hold my breath on that one.
This laptop comes at a steep price as well – nearly $2300, but they are throwing in a free pair of Dre’s headphones as well so that takes a little bit of sting out of the price. On a positive note, the headphone jack on this laptop is on the side of the machine, which I absolutely love! One of my biggest pet peeves lately is that manufacturers are placing laptop headphone jacks in the front, thus making it very difficult to use when on your lap!

$128 is a great price for a Blu-Ray player. I opted to purchase a Playstation 3 recently that I will use as my primary Blu-Ray player. I was able to purchase a brand new PS3 for UNDER $250 with no catch! I’ll be sharing with you how I did it in a later post, so keep checking back.
Computer – Printer – USB Drive
This computer would be a great gift for a student, although I will warn you that each store will have a VERY limited quantity of this item available. Typically fewer than 10 or 20 will be sold depending on the annual sales volume of your local Walmart. People have typically begun camping out the night before for computers on Black Friday. I will be picking up one of the 4GB flash drives for $9 though.
Xbox 360 Bundle
The Xbox 360 Arcade is listed at regular retail price, but includes a free Guitar Hero 3 game and guitar, a $75 value. Personally, I wouldn’t want the “Arcade” version of the Xbox 360 because of its limited features but this could make a great gift for younger kids who are not hardcore gamers.

I’ve been setting up and testing my new HP Pavilion Elite Desktop and 22″ HP High Definition Monitor and have been very happy with the results so far.
I purchased the computer and monitor from CircuitCity.com and took advantage of several money saving offers. The computer is a powerhouse and I haven’t even begun to take advantage of its full capabilities. There is a free media bay that I plan to install a Blu-Ray drive into so I can utilize the high definition monitor better as well. The media card reader and front ports are very easily accessible and the top of the computer is a “grippy” material that is used for docking ports or other electronics peripherals that you don’t want sliding around and falling on the floor.
This 22″ HDMI LCD monitor is crystal clear and a big upgrade over the laptop screen I have been using. The included speakers are in the back of the monitor and I would not recommend utilizing them as the sound is good, but misdirected and poor sounding as a result.
I am utilizing the HDMI capabilities of the computer and monitor together and it makes setup a breeze. The monitor came from the factory with a lower than native resolution (1680 x 1050) so I upped the monitor to it’s limit of 1080p resolution and the picture looks great. I can easily surf two windows side-by-side or be much more efficient at multi-tasking because of the increased screen real estate.
The monitor also includes two USB ports for hooking up extra electronics directly to the display.
This computer is going to be replacing my Compaq Laptop as my primary computer, although I will be keeping the laptop around for its portability. The laptop was only a dual core processor with 1 GB of RAM and just wasn’t doing what I needed it to do anymore.
