A Million Bucks Ain't Enough

I stumbled across a really great article regarding retirement savings and some very easy tables to utilize for finding out if you’re on track to retire a millionaire. But wait… a million dollars when I retire 40 years from now won’t have anywhere near the buying power of a million today, but that’s okay because the charts do the math for you based on different rates of inflation.

Apparently I will probably need more than $5 Million when I retire just to equal the buying power of $1 Million today. Kind of scary isn’t it?

Win a 24" LCD Monitor

John Chow is at it again with another evil make money promotion to get his readers backlinking to him in record numbers. This time he is giving away a 24″ wide screen LCD monitor courtesy of BlueFur.com who’s reputation for hosting Canada has been talked about before on John’s blog.

This is my entry to win – where’s yours?

Woohoo I'm a John Chow Copycat! (input sarcasm here)

Well I just noticed, after taking a long absence from my blog, that my blog was chosen as a John Chow look-a-like by Adie Cooke at Net Business Blog, well actually the picking was done by Erik from Station360, whose site is down or Adie put up a bad link. Ironically this post came out after me announcing my decision to change my blog’s theme because of the exact reasons Adie points out – I guess Adie didn’t read that particular post even though it would have been at the first position on Shaun Carter dot Com.

As for the sports car, it is also explained on this site as a constant reminder and motivator of success I’ve had from a very young age. Striving to achieve the status and income to afford that particular car personifies reaching a level of success I shoot for.

So despite these obvious errors, thanks for the flood of traffic Adie!

Apartment Living

I spent most of today shopping for apartments. What I found was a lot of very small apartments, for what I consider a rather high price. Now, I know that living in West Michigan, I have no business complaining about high rents when there are people paying 5 times as much in other markets. Here’s what I found:

Beginning Rents:

1 Bedroom (about 700 sq. feet) – $600+

2 Bedrooms/1 Bath (about 900 sq. feet) – $650+

2 Bedrooms/2 Bath – $700+

Another interesting development of late is that many properties that used to include gas for heat and hot water are no longer offering it and have not lowered rents to compensate. However, many of the apartment communities here offer a pool and fitness center (some of which were very nice) easily replacing the need for a $40 or $50/mo. gym membership. There are also not many incentives for new renters, other than “hey sign a lease right now and we’ll give you $100 off!”. Sorry but I’m not a sucker for impulse decisions like that.

What is rent like where you are?

New developments…

After some careful consideration and research I have decided to shift the focus of Shaun Carter dot Com from a making money online blog (of which there are now millions) and dedicate this site to money making and saving in a more general form. Primary topics will include money saving strategies for real world people and topics covering everything from making a few bucks online to stock investments, real estate and returning soda bottles for profit – well in the state of Michigan they’re worth a 10 cent deposit!
